Sungi Emergency Response update


The heavy rains in different parts of the country have wrought havoc in lives of people especially the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa (KPK), Punjab, Balochistan & the AJK who are among the worst affected areas. Many human lives are lost while the thousands are displaced due to floods. The bridges are washed away at various places; communication channels are lost; crops have been destroyed and the livelihood is badly affected.


Keeping in view the disastrous situation of floods in Pakistan, Sungi’s Disaster Management  programme made following response till now:

  • 300 aqua boxes contained with special gifts for children, received from Feed the Children UK as in kind donations are distributed in Rajanpur on 7th & 9th September, 2010. These distributions assisted 300 households (1875 individuals Men 412, women 332, Boys 664 and Girls 478) of Mauza Baghon, Mauza Noor Pur and Mauza Rakhdama of Union Council Noor Pur Machi Wala in district Rajanpur.

  • To implement the WASH project funded by Oxfam Novib, Sungi field teams are conducting assessment in Balakot on awareness raising & provision of health & hygiene kit; water supply schemes are identified for rehabilitation; survey for roads clearance is being done. 
  • 364 patients are treated through Sungi’s mobile medical camp in areas of Shaheed Baba, Kuruna, Keraan & Gujjar of district Charsadda. It is noticed that affectees are severely infected through skin diseases; scabies; RTI (Respiratory Tract Infection); body pains because they remained in flood water for long time; stomach problems; diarrhea in children and gastritis. 
  • The video focusing on “Shangla Flood Disaster” (Part - I & II) is uploaded on Youtube & Sungi’s website. 
  • In Kohistan the damage assessment is completed by Sungi & the summary of findings are: 
    • 1,225 households damaged in Pattan union council 
    • 1,051 households damaged in Kyal union council 
    • 670 households damaged in Komila union council 
    • 1,000 households damaged in Sewo union council 
  • To date, the donations received for flood affectees through individuals are PKR: 312,010/- 
  • Proposal is submitted to CIDA through CHF for Rajanpur targeting 8,550 beneficiaries & Abbottabad targeting 450 beneficiaries for shelter, WASH and Non-Food-Items provison. 
  • Submitted proposal to NCA (Norwegian Church Aid) for relief assistance to flood affectees through 300 tents, 13000 blankets & a water filtration plant in areas of Lower Dir, Upper Dir & Swat. 
  • Coordinated with Feed the Children (UK) to send water purification tablets for the affectees in Charsadda & provided update on immediate needs in other affected districts 
  • Sanfo-Aventis a multinational pharmaceutical company is provided assessment & relief packages (cost & items details) for supporting affectees in districts of KPK. 
  • Tides Foundation is provided Sungi’s response details & information in response to their interest for making donation for relief activities 
  • ADP (Association for Development of Pakistan) a US based charitable organization is provided information in response to their interest for supporting flood affectees.

Sungi’s Disaster Management Program sent notification to Sungi’s 5 district (Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Batgram in harza division, Muzafearbad in Azad Jummu & Kashmir) teams: expected economic, human, livestock, infrastructural damages in result of rains. District teams were told to monitor the damages in their working areas and assess the situation for further response.

 

Kashmir Humanitarian Network Meeting
Kashmir Humanitarian Network (KHN) in AJK was recently formed by Sungi for better humanitarian response in pre & post disastrous situations. So being role of KHN members to work closely in emergency situations, a meeting held on July 30, 2010 in Muzaffarabad upon Sungi’s request. During the meeting quick situational update was shared by all NGOs, CBOs & civil society in their respective areas. All organizations agreed to provide support & coordination with each other. 

 

Partners Meeting in District Mansehra
Sungi mobilized the network partners in District Mansehra to analyze the current catastrophic situation. So a meeting held in Mansehra on 30th July, 2010 and the findings were shared with all humanitarian actors through Sungi.

 

Rapid Assessment through Network Members & Consolidated Funds Appeal 
Sungi has collected the data about damages & needs of the affected population through network members. The information has been consolidated for funds appeal & sharing with all national humanitarian network members, GLAs, UN agencies and other stakeholders. Read More


Emergency Response by Disaster Management Committees
In Ghanool union council of district Mansehra, Sungi’s trained Disaster Management Committee (DMCs) members who are also linked with Social Welfare Department conducted emergency response. They rescued the tourists & conducted search & rescue operation in the area.  

 

Clearance of Road between Swar Gali & Boi
The road between Swar Gali & Boi has been blocked by a number of landslides due to heavy rain. So upon request from DCO office, Abbottabad & an initiative to implement district disaster management plan Sungi sent an Engineer to survey the area. Based on the assessment report road clearance work would start by tomorrow & a number of villages would be benefitted through availability of road access. Read More

 

Coordination with DDMA Mansehra & Abbottabad
Sungi is in coordination with DDMA Mansehra and Abbottabad for continuous sharing of information & the required initiatives to meet the needs of the affectees. The information is being inter-changed to make possible efforts to lessen the affects of floods. 

 

Detailed Assessment in Sungi’s Working Area
Detailed assessment is being conducted for damages & need assessment in Sungi’s working area including Allai, Muzaffarabad, Mansehra, Abbottabad and D.I Khan. Meetings are being conducted with ACCs (Area Coordination Councils); men and women DMCs members to chalk out emergency response plan for the next six months.  

 

Appeal for Funds to Novib
Based on preliminary assessment Sungi has requested Oxfam Novib for funds to provide support in WASH sector. The affectees are living in poor hygienic conditions, they require the assistance to keep them safe from diseases becoming common after the flood.
