Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Sungi’s water and sanitation interventions for communities particularly women entails facilitation of the community’s analysis of their water and sanitation profile, their practices of water usage and defecation and their consequences, leading to collective action to become water sufficient and Open Defecation Free (ODF). Women tend to be the major contributor in terms of meeting water needs both for drinking purposes and other essential domestic services within the households. It is evident that women, in both rural and semi-urban areas, having no access to piped water, spend major proportion of their time to walk for hours to fetch water. Through number of project interventions, Sungi has been working to improve the access to water by rehabilitating and providing water supply schemes, and installation of hand pumps. Further, protection and maintenance of drinking water sources, improvement of latrine design, adoption and improved hygienic practices, solid waste management, waste water disposal and other environmental measures.

Documentries

Sungi’s effort to transform water and sanitation practices is to ignite a change in behaviors through a process of social mobilization that is stimulated by provision and improvement of services and facilities. Awareness building, lobbying, advocacy at the local level and community linkages with the service providers through referral mechanisms, campaigning through community engagement and public assemblies with the duty bearers are the major strategies that have been employed in this regard.

Under the local level governance of water for farming, SDF has closely worked with the communities in effective water distribution, efficient irrigation practices, maintenance of water courses, building/maintaining water reservoirs and multiple use of water. A significant proportion of SDF under this component has been during the rehabilitation after earthquake.
