Sungi included Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) work in its strategic interventions since year 2006 after the earthquake causing great damage to the infrastructure, human lives and livelihoods. Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) planning, Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM), DRR focused civic education including school curriculum, hazard and vulnerability assessments and mapping are the major strategies that Sungi has adopted and promoted to reduce the vulnerabilities across the country.
Since disasters and climatic changes are largely induced by human interventions and poor governance of natural resources, Sungi strongly believes that resilient communities, both urban and rural, could only be developed by adapting to the climatic changes and adopting environmentally friendly practices. Over the years, Sungi is engaged with the communities to enhance capacities, reduce vulnerabilities and raise awareness about disaster risks and environmental degradation to minimize climatic impacts. Sungi’s humanitarian response and climate change adaptation work has covered major parts of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, Azad Jammun and Kashmir (AJK), Punjab and Balochistan.
